Gifts from God

In professional hockey, the championship trophy is called the Stanley Cup. When a team wins the cup, players on the team are given time to spend with the cup however they wish. Occasionally there will be news reports about players taking the Stanley Cup to other sports events, parades, the movies, the golf course or any number of unique places. Nobody gets upset because they understand the player has complete control and authority over the cup.

In marriage our spouses are our gifts from God. They belong to us and we belong to them. We have mutual authority over one another for the purpose of being completely filled with the love God gives us through each other.

“The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. And likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does.” (1 Corinthians 7:4 NKJV)

Which means if your spouse wants to take her gift to see a movie or go shopping, she has the authority to do so and you have the obligation to commit. If your spouse wants to talk about serious relationship issues for two hours straight, swallow your pride, quench your frustration, and get ready to listen. If he wants to take his gift to the ball game, buy yourself a cute jersey, root for his team, and go.

Oh, and by the way, if he or she wants to be intimate and cuddle, take something for your “strategically placed headache”, put the remote down and catch the highlights tomorrow on Sports Center, close the door, and give God the glory!

  1. That is so true. Sometimes it is hard to do that. But if we are to live by God’s word we do have to humble down and give our spouse some attention and give God the glory.
