Healing From Church Hurt

Pastors,
On Sunday, April 19, 2026, I preached a sermon about church hurt as a conclusion to the “Healed” sermon series. I believe this sermon can be beneficial to you, your church, and those who have been hurt at church. The premise is this: Jesus healed a man born blind. Then the synagogue (church) revealed many ways people are hurt by church ministries and members, ultimately leading to them putting the man out of the church. In response, Jesus looks for the man and offers him an eternal relationship. If you’re interested, you can watch my sermon on YouTube here.

SERMON TITLE: Healing From Church Hurt

Scripture: John 9:1–38 (NKJV)

Introduction

Church, let’s be honest—Some of the deepest pain people carry didn’t come from the world…It came from the church.

People have been:

  • Misunderstood
  • Overlooked
  • Talked about
  • Pushed out

And for many, church hurt has become a barrier to healing.

But today, we discover something powerful:

Even when people hurt you, Jesus will heal you.

In John 9, Jesus heals a man born blind, but instead of celebration, the religious community creates conflict.

This text shows us:

  • How church hurt happens
  • And how Jesus heals it

I. Church Hurt Often Comes Through Inconsistency

John 9:13–16 (NKJV)“…there was a division among them.”

Explanation:

The Pharisees couldn’t agree—even in the face of a miracle.

  • One group said Jesus couldn’t be from God
  • Another said the miracle proved He was

Same people. Same church. Different responses.

Truth:

The church is made up of imperfect people.

  • Our words don’t always match our actions
  • Our praise doesn’t always match our living
  • Our traditions sometimes override truth

Reality:

Church hurt happens when:

  • People don’t celebrate your breakthrough
  • People don’t understand your testimony
  • People judge your process

Pastoral Acknowledgment:

Forgive us for…

  • Not celebrating with you
  • Not acknowledging your growth
  • Being double-minded

Key Line:

Sometimes the church that should lift you up becomes divided around you.

II. Church Hurt Can Involve Intimidation

John 9:17–23 (NKJV)“…they feared the Jews…”

Explanation:

The healed man’s parents were afraid to speak up.

Why?

Fear of being put out of the synagogue.

Truth:

Fear still exists in the church today.

People are:

  • Afraid to speak up
  • Afraid to be different
  • Afraid to tell their truth

Examples:

  • Leadership pressure
  • “Stay in your place” culture
  • Fear of gossip or exposure

Key Insight:

Some people don’t leave the church because they don’t believe…They leave because they were afraid.

Pastoral Acknowledgment:

Forgive us for…

  • Not defending you
  • Putting pressure on you
  • Using authority the wrong way

Key Line:

When the church creates fear, it stops reflecting Christ.

III. Church Hurt Can Feel Like Incrimination

John 9:24–27 (NKJV)“Give God the glory! We know this Man is a sinner.”

Explanation:

They tried to force the man to agree with their judgment.

They already made up their minds.

Truth:

Church hurt happens when:

  • People judge without listening
  • People make you choose sides
  • People act like they’re always right

Reality:

  • Holier-than-thou attitudes
  • Selective standards
  • Favoritism

Key Insight:

People will raise the bar for you while lowering it for themselves.

Pastoral Acknowledgment:

Forgive us for…

  • Making you feel like the problem
  • Judging you unfairly
  • Using spiritual language to control you

Key Line:

Church hurt deepens when people stop listening and start labeling.

IV. Church Hurt Can Lead to Isolation

John 9:28–34 (NKJV)“And they cast him out.”

Explanation:

After being healed… he was rejected.

He got his miracle but lost his community.

Truth:

Church hurt often results in:

  • Being pushed out
  • Being left out
  • Being talked about

Real Questions:

Have you ever been:

  • Put off a ministry?
  • Left out of decisions?
  • Shut out of relationships?

Reality:

The place meant for belonging became a place of exclusion.

Key Insight:

Isolation is one of the enemy’s greatest tools.

Pastoral Acknowledgment:

Forgive us for…

  • Excluding you
  • Building walls instead of bridges
  • Making you feel like you didn’t belong

V. But Jesus Offers an Invitation

John 9:35–38 (NKJV)“Jesus heard that they had cast him out…”

Explanation:

When the church rejected the man, Jesus went looking for him.

This is the turning point:

  • People cast him out
  • Jesus called him in

Truth:

Jesus is not like people.

  • People may fail you
  • Church members may hurt you
  • But Jesus is still perfect

Key Insight:

Your relationship with Jesus is bigger than your experience with people.

What Jesus Does:

  • He finds you
  • He restores you
  • He invites you into relationship

Response:

“Lord, I believe!”

Congregational Challenge

  1. If you’ve been hurt—don’t walk away from Jesus because of people.
  2. If you’ve hurt someone—ask God to help you make it right.
  3. If you’re part of the church—be part of the healing, not the hurting.

Conclusion

Church, hear this clearly:

  • The church is not perfect
  • But Jesus is
  • People may fail you
  • But Jesus will never fail you

You may have been:

  • Hurt
  • Misunderstood
  • Pushed out

But today Jesus is saying:

“I see you. I know what happened. And I’m still calling you.”

Final Call

Don’t let church hurt:

  • Steal your faith
  • Block your healing
  • Stop your growth

Come back to Jesus. Trust Him again. Let Him heal you completely.

1 thought on “Healing From Church Hurt”

  1. Thank God for Ministry Leaders who are willing to share messages of hope, healing and compassion. Because church congregations are growing communities, sometimes church hurt is experienced by some, but not all. But bless God, that is not the end of the story, as you have carefully and clearly pointed out in this message, Pastor D.
