Two Commandments

Rule #1: The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.

When it comes to our faith in God it’s always good to start from the top. Before we get bogged down in all of the nuances of church life, traditions, or commands that honestly make authentic faith seem overwhelming, we should pause and survey the cliff notes.

Jesus said to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.  This is the first and great commandment.  And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.  On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. (Matthew 22:37-40 NKJV)

The Son of God himself condensed all of scripture into two commands: Love God, Love People. Loving God and loving people like we love ourselves are the building blocks of a simple, meaningful, authentic faith that shows the world what God is like.

So the next time someone tries to make you feel less than holy because you haven’t digested all of Deuteronomy or confirmed all of the prophecies of Isaiah, remind them that a simple faith in a loving God only requires two commands.
